This minisymposium brings together researchers who develop and apply polygonal and polyhedral finite elements (arbitrarily-shaped elements) to improve the ability and performance of conventional finite elements. In particular, the use of polygonal and polyhedral elements provides a great flexibility and adaptivity in mesh design for a complex geometry by discretizing boundary and interface regions into conforming finite elements. The development of polygonal and polyhedral finite elements can be a useful technology for automatic mesh design from CAD geometry. Recent development in the formulation and mesh generation of polygonal and polyhedral finite elements will be discussed in this minisymposium.
